Improvement in western Canada, but infected locations remain

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has revoked another poultry inspection zone order in British Columbia's Fraser River Valley.

In early November, the agency announced that the region's first control zones had been established after an outbreak of the highly contagious bird flu was detected at commercial poultry plants.

However, the agency says it is ending the control zones after completing post-epidemic surveillance, in which no cases of bird flu were detected.

According to the CFIA, there are currently 33 infected sites in British Columbia and 125 previously infected sites, affecting more than six million birds.

The agency has been investigating since the beginning of the year three new sites of infection, including one in Quebec, in Outaouais, in the regional county municipality of Papineau. The other two were reported in Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has already informed the World Organization for Animal Health (WHOA) of the confirmed presence of the highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 in Canada.
