The Horizon Health Network in New Brunswick shows improvements

FREDERICTON — The CEO of one of New Brunswick’s two major public health agencies says recruiting and retaining employees remains the organization’s primary concern.

According to Margaret Melanson of the Horizon Health Network, one of the main reasons nurses quit is because of nurses’ work schedules, which often leave little room for work-life balance.

Ms. Melanson highlighted to reporters Monday the millions of dollars being spent on the Horizon Network’s 12 hospitals in New Brunswick and the more than 100 medical facilities, clinics and offices in the province.

She ensures that emergency care, surgical waiting lists and mental health services are improved.

Ms. Melanson says that “only” 2% of patients who present to the emergency room at Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital in Fredericton, leaving the emergency room without being seen by a doctor.

She also claims that Horizon Health Network has reduced the waiting list for mental health services by 70% thanks to the introduction of “one session therapy.”
