Riley leads at Memorial, where Canada’s Hadwin is just two strokes behind

DUBLIN, Ohio — Davis Riley shot 67-5 on Thursday, completing Memorial’s first-round lead for the second straight game.

Three birdies on his last four holes put him ahead of Matt Wallace.

A win would allow the latter to avoid qualifying for the United States Open.

Riley’s only bogey came on the 18th, when he missed a four-foot putt.

Canada’s Adam Hadwin is among six golfers two shots behind.

The Brit from British Columbia had five birdies that canceled out bogeys on the first and second holes.

Jordan Spieth is also in the group at 69. His only bogey came on the last hole, where he shot his ball twice into a bunker.

Shane Lowry, Mark Hubbard, Danny Willett and Austin Eckroat are also two shots behind.

Hubbard is in the picture despite bogeys on his last three holes.

Rory McIlroy (72) had his day ruined by a triple bogey on the final hole.

Scottie Scheffler hit a 74 in Las Vegas, his worst opening-round result since October 2021.

Mackenzie Hughes (75), Adam Svensson (77), Corey Conners (77) and Taylor Pendrith (77) are the other Canadian golfers at the tournament.

Defending champion Billy Horschel (84) had a very painful round and scored three double bogeys.
