(Ottawa) Global Affairs Canada is investigating a cyberattack and data breach that forced the company to restrict remote access to its computer networks.
A statement from the ministry on Tuesday said that, according to initial investigation results, there had been a data breach and unauthorized access to personal data of users, “including employees”.
Global Affairs said it stopped remote access to its domestic networks nearly a week ago after the company discovered “malicious cyber activity.”
Employees working in the Global Affairs offices have full access to the network, while employees working remotely have been provided “workarounds” to allow them to continue working.
The federal ministry that manages Canada’s foreign affairs, including its embassies and high commissions abroad, says it is important that services and communication channels remain accessible.
According to Global Affairs, the investigation also involves Shared Services Canada and the Canadian Center for Cyber Security, a division of the Communications Security Establishment.
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada was also notified of the “incident.”
