British Columbia received double the snow forecast

British Columbia’s south coast is recovering from a major snowstorm much worse than originally expected.

Environment Canada had said Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley would get four to six inches of snow Monday night through Tuesday morning, but some areas ended up getting twice that much.

The nasty winter storm made for dangerous driving conditions and resulted in accidents on almost every major road during the morning commute.

Most of the province is affected by snowfall, polar currents or winter storm warnings.

“A depression made landfall in Washington State last night. The associated front crosses far southern British Columbia and resulted in another heavy snowfall that began Monday evening,” Environment Canada wrote.

Snow is expected to ease in the afternoon, but another 5-10 inches is expected between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning near the southern sections of the Strait of Georgia from Victoria to Qualicum Bay and near Sechelt.

“Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve,” Environment Canada wrote.

He warned that during periods of heavy snowfall and blowing snow, visibility could suddenly drop to near zero.

“There can be a significant impact on rush hour traffic in urban areas. If visibility is limited while driving, turn on your headlights and keep a safe distance,” the agency added.

Several roads in the lower mainland were closed Tuesday morning as drivers struggled to navigate the slippery conditions.

Richmond RCMP is reminding drivers to clear their vehicles of snow prior to departure.

He stopped 100 vehicles in three hours for not doing so.

“The Richmond RCMP Traffic Unit reminds drivers of the dangers of driving with restricted visibility. If you must be out and about, take the extra time and clear the snow,” the department wrote on Twitter.
