Unemployment rate at 5% in Canada and 4% in Quebec in December

The unemployment rate in Canada was 5% in December, down 0.1 percentage point from the previous month.

Statistics Canada reports that employment in the country rose by 104,000, or 0.5%, over the past month. Employment rose 0.7% in December from its level last May when it peaked.

December job growth was mainly driven by full-time employment, which increased for the third straight month.

Employment of young people aged 15-24 increased by 2.7% in December; among those aged 55 and over it increased by 0.7%, mainly in the 55-64 age group.

In Quebec, the unemployment rate was 4% last month, up 0.2 percentage point in one month. Employment has held steady after rising in three of the previous four months. But year-over-year, Quebec’s employment rose 1.8% and the province’s unemployment rate fell 0.7 percentage point.

In the Maritimes, the unemployment rate rose from 7.3% to 8.1% in New Brunswick and from 6% to 6.7% in Nova Scotia from November to December. In contrast, on Prince Edward Island it fell from 6.8% to 5.6%.
