An order from the Quebec Supreme Court was intended to bring relief to citizens of the Rouge Valley, where the emergency rooms at the Rivière-Rouge Hospital were in danger of being closed in the evenings and at night.
Based on the ruling of the Court of Appeal of February 23, the Supreme Court issued a new order requiring the Integrated Health and Social Services Center (CISSS) of the Laurentides to ensure that the emergency room of the Rivière-Rouge hospital is open at night 15. August.
This should allow both parties to prepare their case for a possible trial should it prove necessary, explained Me Carl-Éric Therrien, lawyer for the plaintiff.
Remember that due to a critical staff shortage, the CISSS des Laurentides decided last December to close the emergency services at the Rivière-Rouge hospital from February 1st between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. The population's discontent had echoed all the way to the National Assembly.
The closure was narrowly avoided due to an appeals court decision and the emergency room has since been open 24 hours a day thanks to interim injunctions.
According to Me Therrien, the Supreme Court's decision on Thursday reassured citizens of the region who would have had to travel at least sixty kilometers to get to the nearest emergency room.
We are happy because it gives the citizens a little breathing space and also offers the hospital staff a better working perspective for the coming months with regard to nighttime emergencies
explained Mr. Therrien.
He said he was open to finding other solutions to resolve the case instead of a trial.
An email to The Canadian Press said: CISSS des Laurentides assured that it is continuing its recruitment efforts to keep the emergency service operational even at night. Even as people temporarily mobilize to support the Rivière Rouge team, the challenge of maintaining these long-term presences remains great.
