The Cancer Priority Coalition is calling for municipal intervention

There Cancer Priority Coalition expresses its positions on prevention initiatives to both municipalities and the Quebec government. In a press release, the group made a list of five proposals to both levels of government.

First, the coalition is reaching out to community groups, including the Chaudière-Appalaches region, to implement preventive measures against skin cancer.

In particular, it is proposed to install sunscreen dispensers in public parks and swimming pools in Quebec. It is also necessary to ensure that there are shaded areas in parks, playgrounds, skate parks, public swimming pools, etc.

As for the Quebec government, three specific requests have been made to carry out this fight against skin cancer for the summer of 2023.

The group first wants to fund skin cancer awareness programs, particularly for children and adolescents, in schools and day camps.

Next, setting up a prevention program for Quebecers working outdoors, particularly to provide free sun protection, is deemed relevant. Finally, a ban on tanning salons is also called for, as these are considered harmful to the skin.

As a reminder, more than 30,000 cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in Quebec every year, including more than 2,000 melanomas. The incidence and mortality from melanoma has more than doubled in Quebec over the past 20 years. 90% of these can be avoided with UV protection.
