Quebecers Félix Auger-Aliassime and Leylah Annie Fernandez were named player and player respectively by Tennis Canada on Thursday.

Auger-Aliassime has had a successful season, which was particularly evident this fall. After earning the top two men’s honors for the second year in a row, he finished 2022 ranked sixth in the world and won four titles on the ATP Tour.

After triumphing in Rotterdam in February, “FAA” lifted the trophy in three consecutive competitions in the weeks leading up to the ATP Finals in which it competed. Champion in Florence, Antwerp and Basel, he also contributed to his country’s victory at the ATP Cup last winter and played in the Laver Cup in September, but most importantly he won his four Davis Cup duels to take the flag towards the first to lead conquest It’s history.

For her part, Fernandez received both Women’s Excellence Awards for the third time in her career. That year, she successfully defended her crown in Monterrey and reached the quarterfinals at Roland-Garros, disposing of 12th and 23rd racquets in the world, Belinda Bencic and Amanda Anisimova. She was also a key element of Canada’s Billie Jean King Cup team that defeated Latvia in April, in addition to competing in that national tournament in Glasgow. In 2022, Fernandez went 5-1 at the Billie Jean King Cup, losing his only duel to champion team member Bencic. She ended the year at number 39 in the world rankings.

“Our athletes and our organization have reached new heights, both on and off the pitch. Félix, who led Team Canada to their first-ever Davis Cup title and won four trophies in ATP singles, deserves those honors with the men. On the women’s side, Leylah has continued to showcase her talent and prove that she is one of the best in the WTA,” said Michael Downey, President and CEO of Tennis Canada, in a press release.

Other winners:

Britain’s Rebecca Marino, for her part, won the Most Improved Player title; Gabriel Diallo was entitled to the male equivalent. Ontario’s Denis Shapovalov was recognized as the doubles player par excellence, while Gabriela Dabrowski received the same award in the women’s category.

Among the award winners, Diallo excelled at the National Bank Championships in Granby in August. In 12 months, the 21-year-old athlete went from 988th to 228th place. He was also part of the Davis Cup-winning team and played his first round-robin finals match in September.
