Overwhelmed nurses expressed concerns ahead of the patient’s death

CBC/Radio-Canada has granted anonymity to two emergency room nurses at the Winnipeg Health Sciences Center because they fear negative effects on their professional lives, including losing their jobs. The two nurses point out that the hospital was very busy on the day the patient died.

According to the second nurse, more than 40 patients were waiting for care that day.

Shawn Young, chief operating officer of the Winnipeg Health Sciences Center, said Thursday that there were twice as many patients as usual on the night the patient died in the emergency room halls.

He said the patient arrived by ambulance just after 11:30 p.m., about an hour later his patient’s condition deteriorated and he died shortly after. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The first nurse points out that staff have already expressed concerns about traffic and staffing shortages in the ER.

She adds that nurses have told hospital administrators and the government that unless emergency room conditions improve, a patient will die in the waiting room.

In a statement, a spokesman for Shared Health Manitoba said hospital managers regularly meet with doctors and nurses to discuss issues in the Health Sciences Center’s emergency room.
