Ovechkin wins his duel against Crosby

The duel between the Washington Capitals and the Pittsburgh Penguins takes on special meaning as two of the National Hockey League’s (NHL) best players, Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin, go head-to-head. In the Capital One Arena, the local favorites won 3-2 on penalties.

Early in the first half of the power play, Ovechkin unleashed a powerful one-timer while positioning himself in his favorite spot to the left of goaltender Casey DeSmith. For the 32nd time this season he overlooked the red traffic light.

Unusually, Quebecers Anthony Mantha and Kristopher Letang threw away their gloves midway through the third period after the two players from Montreal’s South Shore swapped sticks.

Penguins forward Danton Heinen scored his fifth goal of the season on a setback in the second period.

During the final bout, the two teams each moved the ropes once. Marcus Johansson scored his 13th goal of the season for Washington and Bryan Rust scored his 11th with assists from Crosby and Jake Guentzel for the Pens.

Evgeny Kuznetsov and Nicklas Backstrom each scored on penalties to end a two-game winning streak for Peter Laviolette’s side.

Lightning falls on Bruins

After beating the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday night, the Boston Bruins were attempting to record their sixth straight win. However, the Tampa Bay Lightning chilled their mighty opponents with a 3-2 win.

Steven Stamkos saw his run of consecutive games end with at least one goal in five. However, the number 91 got an assist on Nikita Kucherov’s goal, scored in the third period.

Victor Hedman, whose season falls short of expectations, scored the game-winning Bolts net in the third half. Blitzstar goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 36 of 38 pucks thrown.

Bruins goaltender Linus Ullmark, who is a Vezina Trophy contender, made a total of 35 saves.

Despite this setback, the Bruins still sit comfortably in first place in the NHL standings with 80 points total.

The game was broadcast on TVA Sports.
