Online Immigration Service: Reported Delays

The pandemic has caused delays for all sorts of reasons, says Center multiethnique de Québec director Natacha Battisti. Implementing new online systems, we are also not returning all new online forms in Service Canada and Services Quebec.

The border closures and the introduction of teleworking in spring 2020 have also disrupted the processing times for files.

Three weeks now often elapse between applying for and receiving a social security number or a sun card RAMQargues Ms. Battisti. If I don’t have my social security number for twenty or twenty-five days, I can’t go house hunting, I can’t apply for welfare.

The difficulty of getting resources over the phone adds to the problem when there are newcomers experiencing more complex situations.

A teacher victim of delays

Joseph Brown, a teacher of British descent at Cégep de Beauce-Appalaches, suffered the most from the effects of the treatment delays. I did this two months in advance knowing there could be delays.

He finally received his renewal in September 2021, nine months after his old license expired.

Mr Brown was unable to speak to anyone to clarify his status and was forced to stop working for several months.

This period of inactivity now threatens the attainment of his permanent residence. The government requires a minimum of 24 months of full-time work under the Quebec Experience Program.
