Ceremony at Rideau Hall
King Charles III was officially named Canada’s head of state during a ceremony at Rideau Hall on Saturday morning.
Governor General Mary Simon, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and members of the Cabinet gathered just after 10 a.m. to sign the approval of the decree and the proclamation for the accession of the new sovereign.
The Chief Herald of Canada was then to publicly read the proclamation of the new sovereign’s accession to the throne before a solemn ceremony with cannons, trumpets and fanfares.
Prime Minister Trudeau appeared at Rideau Hall with his son Adrien and laid flowers near the book of condolences in memory of Queen Elizabeth II, who died on Thursday aged 96.
Charles III was officially proclaimed Britain’s monarch in a lavish ceremony steeped in tradition and political symbolism in London on Saturday.
The new king approved a number of ordinances, including making the day of his mother’s funeral a public holiday. The date of the state funeral has not been announced, but is expected to take place around September 19.
