Canada has begun evacuating vulnerable Canadian citizens from Haiti to the Dominican Republic. This evacuation will initially be carried out on a small scale, Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly clarified during a press conference on Monday, March 25.
“Our immediate priority remains the safety of Canadians,” said the Canadian minister, specifying that Canada is working tirelessly to assist Canadian citizens, permanent residents and their families still in Haiti.
“To assist affected Canadians, Canada deployed three members of Global Affairs Canada's Permanent Rapid Deployment Team (PRDT) to the region to support its operations and provide emergency response, coordination support, consular assistance and logistical support,” the informed Minister.
The Minister also stated that Canada is grateful to the Dominican Republic, which is helping Canada ensure the safety of Canadian citizens.
In addition, Joly stressed that his country remains committed to supporting Haiti and the Haitian people and is closely monitoring the security situation in Haiti.
According to the Canadian Press, about 3,000 Canadians are registered with the Canadian Embassy in Haiti. According to Canadian media, 245 people have contacted Canadian authorities since commercial flights were canceled at Toussaint Louverture International Airport following an attempt by armed gangs to take control of the airport.
