So the most famous characters reappear on the map and several other names are shown by zooming. It took Topi Tyukanov barely 10 hours to design this card. “It wasn’t the easiest task, but it was doable. Of course, if you’ve never made an interactive map before, you shouldn’t get involved in this project,” warns the geographer, who is used to taking on challenges like the #30DayMapChallenge (make a map on a specific topic every day for a month). .
To create this interactive map, he used a database created by several researchers (including 4 French) and published in the journal Scientific Data in June. In particular, he used a set of information from which he was extracted Wikipedia and from Wikidata, which allowed him to develop the selection criteria to know which personality (living or deceased) should be selected by city. “The data includes a rank score and a ‘sum score’ of popularity, which is used to determine which names are shown and how big they are,” says Topi Tyukanov.
The criteria for the selection of personalities are therefore as follows:- The number of words in his biography. – The average number of consultations for each person between 2015 and 2018. – The number of non-missing items retrieved from Wikipedia or Wikidata (date of birth, gender and sphere of influence). – The total number of external links (sources, references, etc.) from Wikidata.
Personalities are then sorted into four categories: culture, discovery and science, leadership, and sports and games.
Did you know: 10 tips to shine in the community
Topi Tyukanov’s goal isn’t to bring his science back, but that doesn’t mean you can’t. You’ll get 5 personalities born in 5 cities around the world, plus 5 more born in Southwest cities, so you too can shine at Sunday family dinners.
Did you know ? Actress Nina Dobrev (“Vampire Diaries”) was born in Sofia, Bulgaria, director James Cameron was born in the city of Kapuskasing, Canada. What if we told you that Charles V, Emperor of the Holy Empire, was born in Belgium, in Ghent, or even Joseph Stalin in Gori, Georgia? And then Tony Parker, our famous French basketball player, and imagine he was born in Bruges, Belgium.
Figeac (Lot) in the south-west is the birthplace of the decipherer of hieroglyphs, Jean-François Champollion and Bordeaux, those of the English king Richard II (1367-1400). The singer Pascal Obispo comes from Bergerac and the singer and actress Marie Laforêt from Soulac-sur-Mer (Gironde). Renaud Lavillenie, French pole vault champion, was born in Barbezieux-Saint-Hilaire in Charente.
A good plan, then, to kill the hours lost on vacation and refresh your geography and general culture. A very attractive site, but it has limitations and flaws. First, not all cities are listed, especially small ones. Some small errors have also been noticed by netizens, such as the birthplaces of French writer and philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre and Argentine footballer Diego Maradona being in Colombia. Similarly, Topi Tyukanov was interviewed about Canadian-born actress Ellen Page. Today and after her coming out, Ellen’s name is Elliot. The designer explains that he did not touch the data published by the researchers.
And you who was born in your city?
