Lac-Brome will not change its zoning statute to limit short-term rentals in primary residences in preparation for a provincial law change that goes into effect March 25. From this date it is therefore possible, as in most of Quebec’s cities, to rent out your main residence on platforms such as Airbnb for less than a month.
Until then, only residents of 17 other tourist or commercial sectors of the 176 that make up the city could rent their main residence on a short-term basis, explains Ghyslain Forcier, director of communications and relations with residents of Lac-Brome.
The status quo will remain in place for the rental of second homes, which will continue to be permitted only in the same 17 tourism and commercial areas as before.
However, Ghyslain Forcier assures that with a new permitting regime coming into effect, Lac-Brome will now regulate more short term rentals in both first and second homes.
He also claims that the municipality’s decisions in this file are based on several citizens’ consultations that have taken place in recent months.
Last year hundreds of people in the Lac-Brome area spoke out against this type of rental.
In Estrie, other local authorities, including Magog, have enacted regulations to continue to limit short-term rentals in primary residences.
