It’s hard to get in the holiday spirit when Mother Nature doesn’t either. With the rainy downpours of the past weekend, many people are wondering if they will have a white Christmas or if the tree and grass will match.
Do you think we’ll have snow at Christmas?
“It always depends on the weather, you never know what can happen, we’re keeping our fingers crossed that we can make it. But for now it looks like we won’t. But we hope. »
“There is always snow at Christmas”
In fact, winter activities can also be delayed somewhat. Activities are planned throughout December at the Pin Rouge ski resort. This time last year a white blanket covered the ground. Luckily, the ski resort has the ability to make artificial snow. But not all other sports are so lucky.
“There will be a small delay but given the cold we are having right now we are very confident that this will be the case in the coming days or weeks, especially the coming weeks. There will be snow. But for us the trails we have to maintain are all closed at the moment. With the rain we’ve had recently, there’s a lack of snow,” explained Mont Carleton Snowmobile Club President Denis Henry.
The snowmobile season in the region usually begins after Christmas. Currently, the main arteries are covered with snow, but are not accessible to snowcats. Normally they would have already started to compact the tracks to get them ready for the start of the season.
“Because you have to wait until you have a good background. Because our equipment is still quite heavy and we don’t want to break up private land that has been given to us free of charge,” says Mr Henry
At Pointe Duthie, the first snow allowed cross-country enthusiasts to take up the sport. Unfortunately, rain and mild periods dampened skiers’ enthusiasm. Luckily we’re not worried about the time of year in general as the region is still known for strong and late storms.
“Actually, the Gaspé in general. We got a lot more snow than normal. It’s basically just the thaw that wiped away most of the snow altogether. As for the coastal sector, including Chaleur Bay,” says Jean-Philippe Bégin, Environment Canada meteorologist.
The cold weather will arrive by Thursday. According to meteorologists, it is not yet possible to say whether the snow that will fall in the next few days will stay under the Christmas tree. Winter activities could therefore be suspended until the turn of the year.
