Which small cars are best on the road?

A car’s performance, handling and sound are all aspects that affect its driving pleasure. Are you primarily looking for a small car with good road holding for driving pleasure and driving safety?

Here is a list of used subcompact and compact models for you to consider. Please note that we do not consider other criteria such as space, comfort or reliability.

Mini Cooper

Give honor where honor is due. MINI is king when it comes to fun little cars with great handling, whether in 3-door, 5-door or convertible format. With wheels placed close to the corners and a very low center of gravity, we benefit from an agility worthy of a go-kart. It’s not a vehicle for everyone, of course, but criss-crossing the city couldn’t be more enjoyable.

Hyundai Veloster

The Hyundai Veloster is a small hatchback that’s fun, if not spacious, and user-friendly for more than two occupants. Of course you have to like its special design and prefer to choose the 201 hp turbo engine. But one thing is for sure: this unique Korean is good on the road and its just about precise steering increases its dynamics.

Volkswagen Golf

Germans are very knowledgeable about road holding and the Volkswagen Golf is a good example when it comes to smaller cars. In the GTI version, of course, even more. Well-cushioned handling and communicative steering accompany its solidly supported handling.

Subaru Impreza

The Impreza has long been the only compact sedan in Canada with standard all-wheel drive. This is one of the main reasons people adopt it. Well built and soothing in all seasons, it’s hard to fault. The outgoing generation (2017 to 2023) has increased in weight and volume compared to its predecessors, but the new platform that Subaru has given it dynamically compensates for that.

Mazda3

Since the launch of the current generation in 2019, the Mazda3 is available in both sedan and hatchback (Mazda3 Sport) versions with all-wheel drive. The proven i-Activ system is reserved for higher versions and fitted with automatic transmissions, but it’s still an affordable choice… and a car that’s as elegant as it is easy to handle.

Mitsubishi lancer

Discontinued at the end of the 2017 model year, the Lancer is an overall reliable and proven car as it hasn’t evolved much since its introduction in 2008. The larger of its two engines (2.4 liters, 168 hp) could be accompanied by Mitsubishi’s excellent All Wheel Drive Wheel Control (AWC). Very reassuring and very efficient, this compact car is fun to drive all year round.

BMW 2 and 3 series

Do you prefer something more luxurious or with more character? The builder of the “ultimate driving machine” (a slogan that still sticks with BMW) should be at the top of your list of candidates. Whether it’s the Series 2 coupe/convertible or the Series 3 sedan, you can be assured of roadholding thanks to a finely tuned chassis and suspension. Their communicative orientation only emphasizes the sense of control these cars convey.
