Unreal chocolate is reminiscent of salmonella

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued a recall for Unreal brand Dark Chocolate Mini Coconuts due to possible Salmonella contamination.

The recalled item was sold in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador.

“Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled, but it can still make you sick. Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems can contract serious and sometimes fatal infections,” Health Canada said in a statement Friday.

Other symptoms of salmonella include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, stomach cramps and diarrhea. Longer-term complications can include severe arthritis.

The affected product was sold in 435 gram packs and the recall was originally initiated by the brand.

No known side effects of the product have been documented.

According to the CFIA, a food safety investigation is ongoing and may result in the recall of additional items.
