Unemployment rate rises in Alberta in November

After more than 12 straight months of decline, Alberta’s unemployment rate started rising again in November, according to Statistics Canada. It was 5.8%, up 0.6 percentage points in one month.

More than 15,000 jobs were lost between October and November, two-thirds of which were full-time jobs.

The main losses were in construction, trade, and accommodation and catering.

The wholesale and retail trades were hit particularly hard, with 16,100 fewer jobs in one month. Statistics Canada had already noted a slight decline in retail sales in the province between August and September.

These job losses offset increases in manufacturing, natural resources and other services.

Like Alberta, four other provinces saw employment declines in November, but the national unemployment rate fell to 5.1%.

Despite these weak employment numbers, neither the provincial government nor most economists are forecasting a recession in Alberta.
