The unemployment rate was 5% in Canada and 4% in Quebec in December

The unemployment rate in Canada was 5% in December, down 0.1 percentage points from the previous month.

Statistics Canada reports that employment rose by 104,000, or 0.5%, in the country last month. Employment rose 0.7% in December from levels last May, when they peaked.

Employment growth in December was driven primarily by full-time employment, which increased for the third consecutive month.

Employment of young people aged 15 to 24 rose 2.7% in December; Among those over 55, it rose by 0.7%, especially in the 55 to 64 age group.

In Quebec, the unemployment rate was 4% last month, up 0.2 percentage points in a month. Employment remained stable after rising in three of the previous four months. But compared to last year, employment in Quebec rose 1.8% and the province's unemployment rate fell 0.7 percentage points.

In the Maritimes, unemployment rose from November to December in New Brunswick from 7.3% to 8.1% and in Nova Scotia from 6% to 6.7%. On Prince Edward Island, however, it fell from 6.8% to 5.6%.
