The Ontario Liberals are no closer to a new leader

In a second consecutive election, the provincial Liberals failed to elect enough MPs to gain official party status in Queen’s Park.

Three longtime Liberals analyzed the campaign. They interviewed staff, candidates, volunteers and conducted a membership survey.

Their recent report concludes, among other things, that ex-boss was Steven Del Duca unpopular and that the outbreak of the pandemic has harmed him. He was elected chairman in March 2020 shortly before the confinement.

The lack of global vision and training and support for constituency campaigns are also highlighted.

The outcome of the 2022 election campaign was devastating and disappointing for Ontario Liberalswe can read in the report, which also notes a lack of information for voters.

“The topic of data came up in several in-depth interviews and inventories. The central question is: Why didn’t we see it coming? »

Campaign managers said recruiting volunteers was their biggest challenge. Many inexperienced individuals collected data that they felt was inaccurate or contradictory.

One of the main recommendations of the report is to review the process of electing party leaders. Interim Liberal leader John Fraser confirms the party will hold consultations on the matter.

Do changes need to be made to the rules that affect convention attendees? Should we adopt the “one member, one vote” system or a hybrid system? These are issues that will be examined during the consultations, Mr Fraser, who is also a member of the party executive, explained in an interview.

A proposal to give each member one vote was narrowly defeated in 2019.

Depending on what emerges from the deliberations, the party will propose amendments to its charter at its annual congress in March. John Fraser explained that the dates and rules for the leadership candidates will not be determined until this process is complete.

So there won’t be a new leader for a while.

For their part, the New Democrats, whose leader also resigned on election night, will hold out a confirmation vote on February 4. Toronto Rep. Marit Stiles is the only candidate to succeed Andrea Horwath.

Ms Horwath has since been elected Mayor of Hamilton. Steven Del Duca won the mayoralty of Vaughan on October 24.
