MONTREAL – The Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation today announced it has awarded a total of $942,983 in financial support to 65 organizations serving the well-being of children in need across Quebec.
These donations, distributed during a check delivery ceremony at the Bell Center on May 16, will enable organizations in 13 administrative regions of the province to continue promoting active lifestyles among young people from disadvantaged areas.
Children from low-income families, for whom the costs associated with recreational activities are often a major barrier to participating in sports, will benefit from projects supported by the Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation. By supporting initiatives that increase access to local and quality equipment, facilities and programs for thousands of socio-economically disadvantaged young people, the foundation aims to help reduce these inequalities and provide additional incentive for regular physical activity.
“We’re excited to support these organizations that are meeting the priority needs of children from more vulnerable backgrounds by enabling them to participate in physical activity programs in their community,” said Pierre Boivin, executive chairman of the Montreal City Council’s Canadian Children’s Foundation. “Once again this year we are amazed by the variety, ingenuity and quality of the projects presented to us, which are a testament to the enthusiasm of schools and community groups to find different ways to get young people moving in their communities. . The testimonies collected today show the impact these initiatives can have on the future and health of these children thanks to the financial support they receive. »
The grants awarded to these organizations make it possible, among other things, to offer free stays in summer camps or enrollment in day camps to vulnerable target groups, including young people living in poverty, with disabilities or with special needs, starting this summer. While part of the funds are intended to finance the development of inclusive playgrounds, the establishment of advanced psychomotor paths, the revitalization of schoolyards or the repair of multi-sports facilities, another part of the amounts provided will be reinvested in the purchase of various sports equipment. Multiple donations will also be used to organize athletic, recreational, and outdoor activities for nearly 15,000 youth across the province so they can learn different disciplines, such as softball, basketball, boxing, hockey, and slide sports, and thus integrate physical activity into their lifestyle .
Each year, the Foundation’s giving program helps advance charities’ sports and recreation projects aimed at empowering young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in Quebec. Eligible organizations can submit their application on-line between September 1st and November 30th of each year. Applications are evaluated by a selection committee and the following spring, donations are made to projects that meet certain very specific criteria, including directly impacting a significant number of children aged 4 to 17 and implementing development strategies. Preventive intervention for adopting a healthy lifestyle through physical activity. Since its inception in 2000, the Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation has donated over $20.6 million to more than 900 charitable organizations.
