(Montreal) A poll commissioned by FIQ shows that almost three-quarters of Quebecers surveyed support the nurses’ strike.
The Léger survey, carried out on 1um As of December 4, 72% of respondents support the question “I support the nurses’ strike.” These are the “strongly agree” and “somewhat agree” answers added together.
In contrast, only 22% said they disagreed with the statement “I support the nurses’ strike.”
Interesting fact: Support for the strike is stronger among women than men, at 79% among women and 65% among men.
Support for the nurses’ strike is also higher among younger people. 85% of Quebecers aged 18 to 34 surveyed said they supported the strike, as did 71% of people aged 35 to 54 and 65% of people aged 55 and older.
The previous survey
Public support for the nurses’ strike continues unabated. A previous poll conducted Nov. 10-13 by the same company with the same question found similar support.
71% of them then said they agreed with the statement “I support the nurses’ strike” – the “strongly agree” and “somewhat agree” answers combined.
And 22% said they disagreed with the statement.
The online survey was conducted among 1,070 adult French- and English-speaking Quebecers. It is not possible to establish a margin of error because online surveys do not involve true random sampling. However, such a sample typically has a 3% margin of error 19 times out of 20.
The Interprofessional Health Federation (FIQ), which represents 80,000 nurses, practical nurses, respiratory therapists and clinical perfusionists, announced additional work stoppages from December 11th to 14th.
Strikes in the health sector, such as that of the FIQ, are subject to provisions on essential services to be maintained. The lists of these services require the approval of the Administrative Labor Court – which has already happened. The proportion of essential services varies depending on the care unit.
