Speak to a doctor before traveling

How long before traveling is it best to speak to a doctor? Six weeks according to Health Canada.

In fact, it is advisable to find out in advance about the travel destination and the risks that may arise there. There is an option to discuss travel plans with a healthcare professional or visit a travel clinic.

As an example of the need for such a meeting, Health Canada cites the fact that certain medications can alter people's sensitivity to heat.

It is also advisable to find out about diseases that you can contract abroad, how you can prevent them and whether vaccinations are recommended depending on your travel destination.

Once there, further precautions can be taken to ensure a safe journey:

  • with water and food to prevent illness;
  • to prevent insect bites and avoid introducing bed bugs; And
  • Protect yourself from sunburn and prevent heat-related illnesses.

Health Canada also reminds that regardless of the country visited, it is important to bring a basic supply of health products for the trip, as first aid supplies and medications are not always available in other countries or may differ from those in Canada. (NP)
