Radoslav Guentchev received his verdict on Friday at the Longueuil courthouse, with the judge accepting the joint proposal of the two lawyers on the file.
The man, who struggled with mental health issues, intentionally grabbed two people while driving through the streets of Brossard in September 2020. He was driving his father’s car, with whom he had just had an argument.
One of the victims, a 50-year-old, was riding a bicycle on Niagara Avenue. The other, a pedestrian in her forties, was mowed down on Boulevard Pelletier. She succumbed to her injuries the next day.
Two experts have been summoned to testify about the health of Radoslav Guentchev, who is autistic and has a mild intellectual disability. The 32-year-old had stopped taking his medication for a long time when he committed the crime.
The reason dr [Louis] Morrisette [psychiatre appelé comme témoin expert, NDLR], it is a very complex psychological profile to put into words. We were not on the level of someone not criminally responsible. We weren’t in the step of anyone sane either.
explained defender Rémi Cournoyer-Quintal.
The defendant expressed his regrets to the judge, who also informed him that he now understood that he needed to take his medication. Also, he is banned from driving for the rest of his life.
