Security breaches at Sept-Îles hospital

The conclusions of the Québec Ombudsman’s two delegates in charge of the file show that three areas need improvement: triage, monitoring and length of stay in the emergency room.

The two delegates in question toured the facility last July.

According to the report, the duration and average delays of the evaluation or re-evaluation are too long. The delegates, for example, decided that The majority of the sorting sheets did not have a parking meter ticket, which therefore does not make it possible to know the actual arrival time emergency patients.

It is therefore not possible to determine whether the maximum delay of 10 minutes between arrival at the emergency room and sighting at the facility is being observed.

The report also reveals a lack of surveillance, particularly of the isolation room and certain stretchers that are too far from nurses’ stations.

A total of eleven recommendations for improving the situation were submitted to the institution. According to the Quebec Ombudsman, the ZISS de la Côte-Nord accepted all of these recommendations.

The Québec Ombudsman noted that working with the institution was excellent and commended it noted a real desire to improve the situation and the quality of care.

Northeast Quebec Health Workers Syndicate President Karine Ouellet Moreau hope that the report will serve to improve the situation.

It can be dangerous for the staff and for the population »

A quote from Karine Ouellet Moreau, President of the Syndicate of Health Workers in Northeast Quebec.

Great responsibility for nurses but not reporting to them; insufficient, crowded places; the difficulty in keeping track of patients due to the layout of the room; lack of training: According to her, the situation in the emergency room at Sept-Îles Hospital was untenable at the time of reporting to the Québec Ombudsman.

At the time of this writing, the Quebec Ombudsman and the ZISS Côte-Nord could not offer interviews.
