Salmonella in melons: a collection campaign launched in Quebec

Given the numerous cases of melon recalls due to the outbreak of a salmonella epidemic, a class action lawsuit has been filed on behalf of Quebecers who purchased or consumed this melon.

This was announced on Wednesday morning by the law firm Slater Vecchio LLP, which was the origin of this class action lawsuit.

“The goal of this class action lawsuit is to ensure access to justice for those who have become ill or suffered financial loss as a result of consuming or purchasing these worthless dangerous products,” said Saro Turner, partner at Slater Vecchio.

The company is therefore trying to identify Quebecers who purchased a recalled melon sold between October 10 and November 24.

Malichita brand melons were recalled by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency on November 1 because testing detected traces of salmonella bacteria.

The recall was later expanded to include Rudy brand cantaloupes and more were sold across Canada.

At least 129 cases of salmonella have been reported as of Dec. 7, including 91 in Quebec, according to a Health Canada report. This epidemic also resulted in 44 hospitalizations and five deaths.

According to the law firm, “diagnosed cases may represent only a fraction of the true extent of the problem.”
