Multi-year 5G network construction project begins in all remaining tunnels

TORONTO, Nov. 17, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Rogers Communications announced today that it is rolling out 5G service to its customers at all remaining stations on the TTC subway network, as well as the Vaughan subway extension tunnel between Sheppard West and has activated Vaughan Metropolitan Center stations. Rogers also offers more reliable access to 911 for all users in these new locations.

“I am very pleased that our team completed the modernization of the legacy network significantly ahead of schedule,” said Ron McKenzie, Chief Technology and Information Officer. We are now moving on to the next critical phase of the project, which involves expanding 5G coverage to connect the remaining 36 kilometers of route. »

Since launching the Rogers 5G network on the TTC subway in August, Rogers customers have used more than 411 terabytes of data on the subway. This represents more than 99,000 online views of the film Barbie or 62,000 Toronto Maple Leafs games. Data usage is highest at Bloor-Yonge, Queen’s Park and Wellesley stations and in the tunnels between St. George and St. Patrick stations.

In April, Rogers acquired the TTC subway cellular network from BAI Canada. The company has committed to investing hundreds of millions of dollars to provide 5G services and more reliable access to 911 in all 75 subway stations and in all tunnels. In August, Rogers rolled out 5G to its customers in the busiest areas of the TTC subway and activated 5G service for all users in October.

Through December 31, TTC riders can enjoy five free rides by paying with a Rogers credit card from their mobile wallet. For more information, visit rogersbank.com/en/TTC.
