Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Yukon Premier Ranj Pillai to discuss shared priorities for this year’s Yukon Days, a series of annual trilateral meetings in Ottawa.
Prime Minister Trudeau and Prime Minister Pillai discussed how all levels of government can continue to work together to make life more affordable for Canadians, strengthen our public health system and build more housing faster. They also discussed how the Government of Canada and the Government of Yukon can continue to invest in critical infrastructure and building safe and affordable housing for Yukoners.
Prime Minister Trudeau and Prime Minister Pillai discussed their governments’ efforts to drive clean economic growth in the region, including progress on clean power projects that will allow Yukon to upgrade its critical minerals and improve its energy security. Both leaders said they are committed to ensuring investments in a clean economy are made in partnership with and benefit indigenous communities. They also highlighted the role the tourism sector plays in Yukon’s economic growth.
Prime Minister Trudeau and Prime Minister Pillai reiterated their strong commitment to promoting reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. They marked the 50the Anniversary of the publication of Together today for our children of tomorrow (Together Today for Our Children Tomorrow), a document that helped reshape the relationship between the Government of Canada, the Government of Yukon and the Yukon First Nations.
The two leaders discussed the importance of the Arctic region to Canada’s security. The Prime Minister spoke of the federal government’s strong commitment to supporting the health, security and prosperity of the Arctic and defending Canadian sovereignty and regional security.
Prime Minister Trudeau and Prime Minister Pillai agreed to remain in close contact and continue to work together on issues important to Yukoners.
