November is fall prevention month

Falls are the leading cause of death and hospitalizations in Canada, which is why the month of November is dedicated to prevention. In adults, falls are a leading cause of injury in the elderly and a major reason for emergency room visits and hospitalizations. The average length of time seniors stay in hospital after a fall is nine days longer than hospitalizations for all other reasons combined. In addition, more than a third of them require long-term care after leaving hospital. For children under the age of 14, falls are the leading cause of hospital admissions. They are also one of the most common causes of head injuries in children under the age of five.

The CISSS of Chaudière-Appalaches – committed to fall prevention

The CISSS de Chaudière-Appalaches is committed to fall prevention. It has a falls prevention program designed to provide safe and quality care and services to all users. It aims to prevent and reduce falls and reduce the frequency and severity of related injuries while preserving the user’s autonomy. The program is aimed at everyone, but especially at older people.

The brochure “Let’s act together against falls” was produced as part of this programme. Aimed at both seniors and their loved ones, it is available on the CISSS de Chaudière-Appalaches website.
