The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) reports that norovirus is spreading “more frequently” than in the last five years.
According to Global News, PHAC has seen a higher increase in Ontario and Alberta compared to other provinces.
Symptoms of this highly contagious virus include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, and fatigue.
Risks of norovirus infection include several foods, including contaminated fruits and vegetables. Raw or undercooked seafood can also contribute to the spread of the virus.
It is important for people with the virus to drink large amounts of fluids because vomiting and diarrhea can cause significant dehydration.
But how can you avoid it?
As with most viruses, good hand hygiene remains an effective solution to warding off germs.
Frequent disinfection of household surfaces can also help prevent norovirus.
Note that while hand sanitizers are useful for warding off germs, alcohol-based sanitizers may not work against norovirus.
