Nick Suzuki is ready to become captain, according to Mathieu Perreault

Though still very young, Mathieu Perreault believes forward Nick Suzuki will be the next Montreal Canadiens captain.

The 34-year-old from Quebec, who announced his retirement in recent days, faced the Ontarian in the CH dressing room last season. The character of the 23-year-old quickly captivated him.

In a Friday morning interview with Jean-Claude Lajoie on BPM Sports, Perreault hinted that Suzuki was ready to take on more responsibility.

“You can give Nick the ‘C’, he’s ready to wear it,” he said. He can be supervised by Joel [Edmundson] at the same time. I think it would be a nice transition to have him now so he can follow in the footsteps of some of the guys in the dressing room. Personally, I loved Nick and I think he would be ready for that.”

The middleman led the Canadiens with 61 points in 82 games in 2021-2022. He’s three seasons behind the tie, having amassed 143 points in 209 games with the Habs.

Remember that the captaincy is vacant in Montreal. Shea Weber, who had the “C” sewn into her jersey from 2018 to 2022, was sidelined last season due to injury and has since been traded to the Vegas Golden Knights.
