The ensemble of around ten musicians, born in Alsace in 2008, organizes numerous private and public events to the sound of the bagpipes and in traditional costume.
A Scottish musical formation composed of Scottish pipers and drummers, the Highland Dragons Pipe Band Strasbourg is the 5001st pipe band on the planet (yes, that’s right). At the time of its inception, late 2008, no fewer than five thousand had been displaced to Ireland from Scotland via Canada, Australia and Japan. After playing in other pipe bands in Germany, Yannick Henry founded the Alsatian ensemble.
“I’ve always loved this music.” says Sophie Hornberger, a member of the formation, for whom the story in the group began unexpectedly. The Pipe Band played at my wedding. After that I went to one of their rehearsals to thank them and left with a drum“. Since then she has played the tenor drum and shares a passion for Scottish and Celtic culture with the dozen other musicians.
And of course they take part in many events in the region in the kilt. uColors of the plaid pleated wrap skirt may vary. Hers is green, blue and white. “The color of the kilt is specific to each whistle band. The shoes have special laces that allow you to extricate yourself from the mud often found in Scotland” (a pipe band has its origins in the Scottish regiments that were incorporated into the British army, editor’s note). The outfit is rounded off by the traditional satchel, glossing over the kilt’s lack of pockets.
The ensemble is constantly looking for new musicians to fill the various desks. According to the members, all you have to do is be motivated and willing to put in the time,”because learning to play the bagpipes, like the Scottish snare drum, requires energy and discipline“. Count a year to get a harmonious sound.
