Modernization of Radio-Canada/CBC | Liberal Party of Canada

Radio-Canada/CBC is a fundamental Canadian institution. Canada’s public broadcasters are under increasing pressure as advertising revenue declines across all channels. In the very changing world we live in, Radio-Canada/CBC’s mandate needs to be updated.

A re-elected Liberal government commits to:

  • Update CBC/Radio-Canada’s mandate to meet the needs and expectations of today’s Canadian audiences with unique programming that sets itself apart from commercial stations.
  • Reaffirm the role of public service broadcasting in protecting and promoting the French language and francophone cultures in Quebec and across the country.
  • Increase production of national, regional and local news.
  • Give more weight to Radio-Canada International, our voice for peace, democracy and universal human values on the world stage.
  • Ensure indigenous voices and cultures are present on our screens and radio channels.
  • Bringing Canadian television and film productions to the world stage.
  • Grant of US$400 million over four years to CBC/Radio-Canada to reduce the station’s reliance on private advertising, with the aim of eliminating advertising during news and other public affairs programming.
