Mazda | No MX-30 plug-in hybrid for Canada

Japanese brand Mazda recently unveiled a new plug-in hybrid version of its MX-30 electric subcompact crossover at the Brussels Motor Show. This new version of the model adds to its arc using technology that has long been abandoned by the manufacturer but is not expected to return to Canada any time soon.

Officially named the e-Skyactiv R-EV, this version brings back the Wankel engine but in a minor role. His job here is to increase the overall autonomy of the vehicle without moving it. To do this, Mazda has halved the size of the battery, which ranges from 35.5 kWh in the electric version to 17.8 kWh in this plug-in version. According to the European measurement protocol (WLTP), a purely electric range of 85 km is forecast. When the battery is drained, the small 830cc combustion engine with a 50-litre tank takes over.

At the same time, Mazda has slightly increased the power of the electric motor, it increases from 143 hp to 167 hp. However, none of these promotions are offered in Canada. The manufacturer has confirmed to us that this plug-in MX-30 will not land in the country, a probably missed opportunity to make this model more attractive. Keep in mind that the electric MX-30 has a maximum range of just 100 miles.
