Man dies in workplace accident in Chelsea

A man was killed in an industrial accident on the Chemin de la Rivière during road repair work in the municipality of Chelsea on Monday morning.

The police department of the MRC des Collines-de-l’Outaouais says it received a call at around 7:15 a.m. about an industrial accident near 243 chemin de la Rivière in Chelsea, in a construction site.

A 10-wheel truck is said to have been reversing while a colleague was busy filling his tracked tractor with dieselthe police said in a press release on Monday morning.

The tractor driver, a 63-year-old man from Bouchette, was trapped between the two trucks. His death was confirmed at the scene of the accident.

Investigations are underway to clarify the exact circumstances.

The Commission on Standards, Equity, Health and Safety at Work (CNESST) was called to the scene.

The Chemin de la Rivière section is closed

Representatives from the Chelsea community also visited the site to assess the situation.

In a press release, the community expressed its condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones and announced that flags will fly at half-mast for the next three working days.

The section of the Chemin de la Rivière between Chemin Carnochan and Chemin de la Carrière, as well as the Voie Verte Chelsea section at the same point, are closed indefinitely.

Only residents who live in this zone have access to it, the municipality says.

Motorists are asked to follow the diversions via Chemin Saint-Clément in the north or Chemin Pine in the south.

The municipality adds that it will issue a new press release once the road is reopened.
