LPGA: Canadians fight in Portland

The Canadian golfers taking part in the Amazingcre Classic all fell in the standings Friday in Portland, Oregon, but only one of them failed to qualify for the weekend rounds.

26-year-old Maddie Szeryk couldn’t evade the ax in her first season on the LPGA Tour. After a difficult first round of 73, Szeryk couldn’t do better, returning a map of 74 (+2) and finding himself in 96th place.

Canadian golf favorite Brooke M. Henderson appears to be unhappy with her round of 70 (-2), which dropped her from seventh to 13th place. Notably, she committed three bogeys in the back nine to give her a -6 total.

Eventually, Ontario’s Alena Sharp had to settle for par (72) and stay at -4. The status quo dropped him from seventh to 26th place.

It is Germany’s Esther Henseleit (64) and American Lilia Vu (66) who top the rankings at the start of the weekend. Since the beginning of hostilities, they have hit the white object 134 times (-10).

Surprising leader after one day, Japan’s Ayako Uehara (73) failed to repeat her exploits and is now 13th, most notably tied with Henderson.

Max Homa wants to defend his title

On the PGA side, American Max Homa is well in the saddle to defend his Fortinet Championship crown, he sharing the lead with England’s Danny Willett after 36 pennants.

Homa scored an eagle on the 16th hole to climb to the top of the leaderboard. He dealt a card of 67 (-5), slightly lower than Thursday when he had impressed at 65.

As for him, Willett cleaned no fewer than eight shots from par on Friday. He didn’t do any bogeys during the day.

Despite a spectacular first round of 63 (-9), USA’s Justin Lower surrendered the reins to the competition after a risky day with 71 (-1).

Canadian golfers posted mixed results. Adam Svensson (71) and Taylor Pendrith (70) did well, finishing 14th and 40th respectively, and Mackenzie Hughes (71) stood out at the end of the course, finishing 41st.

Nick Taylor narrowly got into the weekend rounds after playing 75 (+3). Corey Conners (74) and Michael Gligic (75) have packed their things.
