In 2022, residents of the MRC de La Vallée-du-Richelieu (MRCVR) brought some more material to the landfill. However, the region achieved a slightly higher recovery rate than in 2021.

Last year, 40,115 tons of materials for the residential, industrial, commercial and institutional sectors were produced on the territory of the MRC. This data excludes the communes of Saint-Basile-le-Grand and Chambly. In 2022, 16,788 tons were landfilled, which is 2,000 tons more than in 2021. However, the recovery rate last year was 59% compared to 58.6%. The amount of materials produced in 2021 was only 33,000 tons. Still, the number of materials dumped in 2022 remains the second-lowest total since at least 2015. In addition, the population has increased by about 1.08% over the past year.

The recovery trend has been increasing steadily since 2015. At that time, the recovery rate was only 26.9%. In addition, the amounts of total organic matter from food waste and green waste are 12,490 tons, an increase of 13.7% compared to 2021.

“The positive results in terms of landfill reduction are the direct result of the good sorting habits of the citizens of Vallée-du-Richelieu, who have continued to strive to sort materials in all their bins,” said Marilyn Nadeau, prefect of the MRCVR and mayor of the municipality of Saint-Jean-Baptiste.

Still, the MRC notes a slight decrease in the overall recovery rate for door-to-door pickups, which stands at 54.31%.

2022 also marked the first full year of operation of the eco-centre, which opened its doors at Mont-Saint-Hilaire at the end of November 2021. almost 28 000 Visitors deposited 5,757 tons of material there. From this batch, 5108 tons were recycled, which corresponds to a recycling rate of 88%. Beloeil and Mont-Saint-Hilaire have the most users of this municipal infrastructure with 10 175 and 8975 User.

The eco-centre has improved its services this year and is open to the public for one more day spread over five days, from Thursday to Monday. This schedule is valid from the end of March to October 30th.

The increase in the number of opening days is due to the entry of the company OPSIS Gestion d’infrastructures as the new manager since the 1stum January. Previously, the eco-center had been managed by Nature-Action Québec since it opened.
