Job openings peak in Canada in June

According to Statistics Canada, job vacancies rose 3.2% in June to a new high as employers tried to fill more than a million jobs for the third straight month.

The federal agency says employers were actively trying to fill 1,037,900 positions, up from 1,005,700 in May. The job vacancy rate was 5.9% in June, reaching the record set in September 2021, compared to 4.9% in June 2021.

Also according to Statistics Canada, employers in the health and social services sector wanted to fill 149,700 jobs in June, up 4.3% from May and 40.8% from a year earlier.

Job vacancies in the accommodation and catering sector totaled 171,700 in June, an increase of 6.6% compared to May and 38.8% compared to June 2021.

In retail, job vacancies rose 15.3% from May to 114,400 in June. Job vacancies in this sector have increased by 22.5% compared to June 2021.

Job vacancies exceed unemployment in four provinces: Quebec, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. In Quebec, the ratio of unemployed to vacancies is 0.6.

Quebec’s June job vacancy rate was 6.7%, one of the highest in the country, along with British Columbia and the Yukon. In New Brunswick it is 4.4%, in Nova Scotia 5.3% and on Prince Edward Island 4.8%.
