Iran | New sanctions from Canada as crackdown continues

(OTTAWA) Secretary of State Mélanie Joly has announced a fifth round of economic sanctions against Iran as the country continues its crackdown on human rights protesters.

Mme Joly said in a statement Wednesday that two companies, Shahed Aviation Industries and Qods Aviation Industries, will be placed on Canada’s sanctions list for their ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a branch of Iran’s military.

The statement of Mr.me Joly describes the companies as essential to the regime’s ongoing activities, including its support of Russian forces in the invasion of Ukraine.

Canada also bans economic ties with six people it says are senior officials and regime supporters, including a former IRGC commander-in-chief.

The sanctions follow Ottawa’s official invocation of rarely applied immigration rules earlier this week to block thousands of government and military officials from entering Canada.

Iran has made mass arrests and started imposing harsh sentences on people involved in widespread protests after Mahsa Amini, 22, died in police custody in September after being arrested for allegedly violating the strict country dress code for women was.
