The Governor General of Canada, Mary Simon, used International Women’s Day to denounce the hate she faces on social media.
“Innu Indian parasite”, “worthless hunk of meat”, “miserable cow”, “political whore”; The governor general’s office uploaded a video made up of dozens of hate messages Ms Simon has received over time.
Several of the insults relate to the origins of Mary Simon, who became the first Indigenous woman to serve as Governor-General in Canada in July 2021.
“Many critics will say that women should just learn to be ashamed and not take everything seriously. […] Other people will say that insults on the internet are part of a public figure’s job, while such insults, spoken in person, would be condemned,” Ms Simon said in a press release.
“I respectfully disagree with those who say so,” she continued.
Faced with the spate of outrages among his posts, the governor-general’s office decided in February to shut down comments on social media.
“I bring this up on behalf of people who cannot do this for fear of reprisal or punishment. But I hope other voices will join mine. We must continue to speak out about the excesses of offensive language and denounce those who denigrate women for their contributions to society,” pleaded Mary Simon.
