Montreal Canadiens head coach Martin St-Louis was inducted into the Tampa Bay Lightning Hall of Fame along with Vincent Lecavalier and Phil Esposito on Friday.
The former Florida team star looked back on his early stints with the Lightning, which, contrary to what many might think, weren’t easy.
“I had a very good training camp and the circumstances meant that I started from the fourth row,” he recalled.
“In the first 20 games I felt very, very close to Europe. If I hadn’t had that click, around game 20 or 25, I don’t think we’d be talking today.
St-Louis then gave himself the task of convincing the team’s best players to want to play with him, which worked.
“When I started unlocking, I really challenged myself to convince the best players on the team to play with me and go to the coach [John Tortorella] to tell him to bring it to me. I didn’t win this overnight.”
