Health Canada is warning Canadians about the risks associated with certain henna cones because they may contain phenol, even if it is not listed on the product label.
This substance is on the ministry's critical list of cosmetic ingredients.
Products containing it can be dangerous if they come into contact with skin because phenol can cause chemical burns, resulting in redness, blisters, or a painful burning sensation.
Health Canada recently received three incident reports related to henna cones. Two of these were related to skin irritation caused by using the same cones, while the other reported that a previously recalled product was still on sale.
Sampling and analysis of certain products confirmed the presence of phenol and a recall was issued for the following products:
- Shakeel Bhai Mehndi Waley Almas Henna Cones;
- Shakeel Bhai Mehndi Waley Original Special Zeenat Henna Cones;
- Shakeel Bhai Mehndi Waley Special Bridal Henna Cones;
- Henna cones “Shakeel Bhai Mehndi Waley Special Bridal Cones”.
Since the health organization suspects that other henna cones sold in the country also contain phenol, it advises consumers to report any side effects from these products.
In the event of a reaction, it is advisable to throw it in the trash and consult a doctor. (NP)
