Francophone Immigration: Canada reaches its destination outside of Quebec

Canada’s Immigration Minister Sean Fraser earlier announced that for the first time his country has met its target for Francophone immigration outside of Quebec. In fact, many foreigners choose to settle in small towns to find the peace of everyday life.

In fact, the federal government announced that 16,300 new French-speaking immigrants will be welcomed outside of Quebec in 2022. That equates to 4.4 immigrants speaking French outside of Quebec. A first for Canada, which set this goal in 2003.

Including this Algerian family who decided to leave the capital Paris to live in Canada. Specifically, in Moncton in September 2023. However, since arriving on Canadian soil, they continue to face challenges that complicate their installation.

Immigration: An Algerian family shares the challenges of settling in Canada

Based in Paris for twenty years, the Seddiki family chose to live in New Brunswick, above all somewhere quiet. According to the testimony of the father of this family, Mourad, on Radio Canada, the friendliness of the people, the space, have always seduced her.

Originally from Algeria, the Seddiki family have recently settled in Canada

Despite this, the settlement of this Algerian family in Canada between housing, work and health was not without its challenges. In fact, this father has indicated that, in order to find a job in this region, Mourad has decided to give up his 15 years of experience as a German teacher certified in France in a secondary school. He currently holds the position of Settlement Counselor and Atlantic Immigration Program (ICAP).

The difficulty of dropping out of school is not the only obstacle this Algerian family encounters. In fact, the housing crisis in Canada has also affected this family, both in terms of housing availability and housing prices. Mourad says he pays $1,400 in rent to house his small family. This came as a shock to the father, who used to pay 600 euros for his accommodation in Paris.

Finding a family doctor is one of the challenges for newcomers to Canada, including this Algerian family. Especially because of the lack of staff in the health care system in this country. Despite these difficulties, the Séddiki family wants to stay in Canada and not let their dreams go to waste.
