Figure skating: Canada wants its bronze medal

Despite Russian Kamila Walieva's disqualification for doping, Canada is not entitled to the bronze medal in the team figure skating competition at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.

The International Skating Union (ISU) announced this on Tuesday. She revealed a modified points table that removed Valieva's points for the two competitions she competed in, without adding points to the contestants who finished behind her.

This puts Russia in third place. She initially took first place on the podium. The United States are the new champions, while Japan now takes the silver medal. Canada is still fourth, one point behind the Russian team.

“The International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has decided that the ban includes a “disqualification” in addition to a four-year ban on competition [de] All competition results” that Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva has received since testing positive. In its latest decision, the ISU is not applying Rule 353, which states that “competitors who completed the competition and were originally ranked lower than the disqualified competitor will advance in their rankings accordingly,” a Skate Canada news release said on Published Tuesday.

“Skate Canada strongly disagrees with the ISU’s position on this issue and will consider all options to appeal this decision,” the association continued.
