Forward Eric Staal reportedly signed a one-year contract with the Florida Panthers on Friday, more than three months after his brother Marc.
According to the DailyFaceoff, the 37-year-old Center will receive a salary of $750,000 as part of the one-pact deal.
However, Staal had been released at the end of his pro trial early in the regular calendar. General manager Bill Zito said he doesn’t anticipate the salary flexibility necessary to maintain the services of the 1,293-game National Hockey League veteran.
Even without a valid contract, Staal continued to train with the Panthers to return to the Bettman circuit, and his gamble paid off. Aaron Ekblad’s long-term injury, among other things, allowed Zito to save up the money needed for a contract.
In 2021-2022, the Thunder Bay native wore the colors of the Iowa Wild for four games of the American League. He also acted as captain for the Canadian team at the Beijing Olympics.
During his career, Staal played for the Carolina Hurricanes, New York Rangers, Minnesota Wild, Buffalo Sabers, and Montreal Canadiens. He had played 21 playoff games with the Habs in 2021, accumulating eight points.
In his career, he had 441 goals and 1,034 points in the regular season and 59 points in 83 playoff games. He won the Stanley Cup in his sophomore year at the circuit in 2005-2006 with the “Canes”.
Staal will continue to develop with the Panthers along with his brother Marc, a 35-year-old defenseman. He had initialed an agreement identical to his brother’s last July.
