Electric Aircraft | Beta Technologies settles in Montreal

(Montreal) Another manufacturer in the field of electric aviation opens a branch in Quebec. The American company Beta Technologies officially announced the opening of a development center in Montreal on Wednesday.

The center already has about fifty employees. The Montreal team will play a role in the development and certification of Beta’s ALIA aircraft. The all-electric device is designed for short distances.

In June 2022, Beta’s prototype flew 2,000 nautical miles round trip from Plattsburgh, New York to Bentonville, Arkansas. The device stopped along the way to be charged via the infrastructure the company is building in parallel.

Founded in 2017 in Vermont, the startup counts Amazon among its shareholders. In 2021, it signed a bulk deal with courier company UPS for an order of up to 150 devices. At the time of signing, the first 10 devices are expected to ship in 2024.

Beta isn’t the only American electric aviation company with plans for Quebec. This is also the case with the Texas company Jaunt Air Mobility, which is developing an electric aircraft that takes off and lands electrically. The company, which is raising interest in a potential air taxi service in the Montreal area, has offices in Quebec.
