The Coalition des Montérégiennes is proud to present its two latest achievements: an interactive web platform and a series of video capsules highlighting the natural environment of the 10 Montérégian hills, namely Oka, Mont-Royal, Saint-Bruno, Saint-Hilaire, Saint-Grégoire, Rougemont, Yamaska, Brome, Shefford, Mégantic and Mont Rigaud. This new exhibition takes a look at the unique and unmistakable ensemble of the hills and invites you to discover their beauty and their countless treasures. This is a great asset in making the general public aware of their importance, the threats that burden them and the solutions to protect them – a work that will continue and improve over time.
The web platform is designed to publicize and illustrate conservation work in the hills and to arouse the interest of those wishing to deepen their knowledge of these jewels of biodiversity. “Both the educational and scientific community, enthusiasts of geology and biology, or anyone who is just curious can dive headfirst into the conservation issues affecting the Montérégie Hills. This platform presents Montérégie’s regional conservation and connectivity plan in an original and accessible way. Good to know: this also includes the nature conservation plans specific to each hill, which analyze the challenges that arise at the local level,” explains Éric Malka, General Manager of Nature Connection – the organization that has steered the implementation of the regional video capsules.

The videos will be presented in the form of a series with a total of 13 video capsules, which will be published gradually on the coalition’s social networks until autumn 2023. The never-before-seen images captured throughout the seasons and throughout the area are guaranteed to create a “wow effect”! Listening to the first 11 capsules opens up spectacular views that reflect the main features of each hill. A new ski jump is presented in pictures every week. And to mark the coalition’s anniversary in the fall of 2023, two more videos will complete the series, taking a global look at the hills as a whole. People who are passionate about subjects as fascinating as geology, conservation and connectivity of environments, land use, civic engagement, etc. will take different perspectives.
Covering the area from west to east for more than 250 km, the video series begins in May with a view of Mont Rigaud – although it does not share the same geological formation as the Montérégiennes, this hill faces the same protection problems. The Mont Rigaud area is a real lung of the Vaudreuil-Soulanges region. Did you know that southern Quebec is home to one of the rare old growth forests, 240 species of birds and a variety of animals including coyotes and fishermen? It’s a place to explore and protect!

The Coalition des Montérégiennes would like to thank RBC through its Techno-Nature program and the Echo Foundation for their respective financial contributions to these two projects. It should also be noted that this project was carried out under the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s Partnership for Natural Environments Project (PPMN). Finally, it is important to highlight the work of the many artisans who contributed to the production of these relevant teaching tools. The content, rich in quality and quantity, that can be found there is a testament to the love for these iconic places that affect half the population of Quebec!
