CN announces that it has appointed a new French-speaking Director to its Board of Directors. This is Michel Letellier.

The rail company announced the news in a press release on Thursday, stating that Mr Letellier will take office on October 1.

Michel Letellier, 58, is President and Chief Executive Officer of Innergex Renewable Energy, a large independent renewable energy producer headquartered in Montreal. The company has offices in Canada, the United States, France and Chile.

CN management praised his leadership experience and expertise in sustainable development.

The Canadian company has been heavily criticized in recent months for not having any French-speaking directors on its board since announcing the departure of Jean Charest last spring.

Last June, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Tracy Robinson, refused to apologize for the lack of Francophone representation but promised to remedy the situation as soon as possible.

CN’s headquarters are in Montreal and the company is subject to the Official Languages Act, which has fueled criticism for this glaring absence. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he was “blown away” by the situation.
